Preparing Your Property for the 2026 Fire Season

The 2026 fire season on the Western Slope is projected to be one of the driest in recent years. With below-average snowpack and rising spring temperatures, the window to prepare your property is rapidly closing. Waiting until you smell smoke in the air is too late. Here is your essential checklist for securing your land and home.

    1. Establish the "Home Ignition Zone" (0-5 Feet)

The most critical area of your property is the immediate 5-foot perimeter around your home and any attached structures (like decks or garages). This zone must be entirely free of combustible materials. Remove all flammable mulch, dead leaves, pine needles, and firewood piles. Replace wood mulch with gravel or stone, and ensure no branches overhang your roof.

    2. Eliminate Ladder Fuels

"Ladder fuels" refer to tall grass, shrubs, and low-hanging branches that allow a ground fire to climb up into the forest canopy. Once a fire reaches the canopy, it spreads rapidly and becomes incredibly difficult to control. You should prune tree branches up to 6-10 feet from the ground and clear out dense brush beneath mature trees.

    3. Clean Your Roof and Gutters

During a wildfire, thousands of burning embers are carried by the wind, often landing miles ahead of the main fire front. If your gutters are full of dry pine needles and leaves, a single ember can ignite your roof. Make it a habit to clean your gutters and roof valleys at least twice during the dry season.

    4. Ensure Emergency Access

If a fire breaks out, emergency responders need to be able to reach your property safely. Ensure your driveway is wide enough for a fire engine, clearly marked, and free of overhanging branches that could obstruct large vehicles. A well-cleared driveway also serves as an excellent firebreak.
